Coming in Classical: Rossini – William Tell Overture
Activity Instructions:
Play song as children enter
Historical information:The William Tell Overture is the overture to the opera William Tell (original French title Guillaume Tell), whose music was composed by Gioachino Rossini. William Tell premiered in 1829 and was the last of Rossini’s 39 operas, after which he went into semi-retirement, although he continued to compose cantatas, sacred music and secular vocal music. The overture is in four parts, each following without pause.
There has been repeated use (and sometimes parody) of parts of this overture in both classical music and popular media, most famously as the theme music for The Lone Ranger in radio, television and film. Franz Liszt prepared a piano transcription of the overture in 1838 (S.552) which became a staple of his concert repertoire.

Pass out microphones. Say hi to the children by name. Then ask them what songs they’d like to sing today. After singing a few, then have children repeat syllables for do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-do. Then sing song a little bit at a time with syllables. Afterwards, sing with english words.

Dump a variety bucket of instruments out for children to play and try different instruments. Teacher’s choice on background music, make sure that the song lyrics are clean and the topic is child-appropriate. You may want to find out some of your participants favorite popular songs and include them here!
Musical Composition Activity: Word Rhythms
Activity Instructions:
Every word has a natural rhythm. The best and most memorable songs are the ones where we sing the word with the same rhythms and natural pitches, as we would say the word.
Ask the children something that they like to do.
IE Liam likes to swim in the ocean.
Say it, then sing it.
When we write the words to a song, we are writing lyrics.

Review the shapes of the different types of rests with the students. Then have them go touch the rests on the wall as you sing about them.
