    Pass out drums to students, with 2 drumsticks each (use a mix of wood and plastic drumsticks). Explain that there are different ways that drummers hit the drums, and that today we are going to learn one, a paradiddle. A paradiddle consists of two single strokes followed by a double stroke, i.e., RLRR or LRLL. When multiple paradiddles are played in succession, the first note always alternates between right and left. A single paradiddle is often used to switch the “lead hand” in drumming music.     Get out small parachute, have children hold the edge. Raise parachute when the your singing gets louder, and lower when your singing gets softer. You can also bounce back and forth quickly between loud and soft. The movement helps the children hear and distinguish the concept of dynamics/crescendo/descrescendo.

    Pass out handbells for CDEF and G. Then have them practice ringing the bells in the air and muting them on the ground. Ask the children what color they have. Then have them play one color at a time up and down the bells from C-G-C. Then have the children play the song, by cuing the colors.

  • Solfege Song: Row Your Boat

    Activity Instructions:

    Hand out microphones. Say hello to each of the kids. Ask the children what songs they would like to sing.
    Then transition into solfege. Have them sing Do, Re, Mi Fa, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, then Do (repeat several times, be silly)
    Sing syllables one phrase at a time, repeat phrase with parents.
    Afterwards, sing song on words.

    Activity Instructions:

    Have the children put colored objects into a row… then use the color order to play a song.


  • Musical Game: Crescendo Decrescendo Parachute Shake

    Activity Instructions:

    Get out small parachute, have children hold the edge. Raise parachute when the your singing gets louder, and lower when your singing gets softer. You can also bounce back and forth quickly between loud and soft. The movement helps the children hear and distinguish the concept of dynamics/crescendo/descrescendo.
