Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is a popular English lullaby.

The words to the song, the lyrics, come from an early english poem by Jane Taylor, entitled, “The Star.” The poem was in couplet form, and was first published in 1806 in Rhymes for the Nursery.

The melody comes from the french song, Ah! vous dirai-je, maman. The melody was popularized by Mozart in his Twelve Variations on Ah! vous dirai-je, maman, but actually predated him, and was also set by many other classical composers including Bach, Hayden, Liszt, and Saint Saens. The same melody is also used for children’s favorites, the ABC Song and Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Song Lyrics

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are

When the blazing sun is gone
When he nothing shines upon
Then you show your little light
Twinkle Twinkle all the night
Twinkle Twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are

Then the traveller in the dark
Thanks you for his tiny spark
He should not know where to go
if you did not twinkle so
Twinkle Twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are

In the dark blue sky you keep
Often through my curtains peep
For you never shut your eyes
‘Til the sun is in the sky
Twinkle Twinkle little star
Thank you for your tiny spark
