    Historical information:

    Aaron Copland was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music. Instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, in his later years he was often referred to as “the Dean of American Composers.”

    Activity Instructions:

    Distribute instruments. Allow children to explore tapping with fingers, hands, and shaking. Then introduce song. Repeat several times.

  • Lapride: Bicycle Race

    Activity Instructions:

    Have grownups sit children in their lap. Introduce the lap ride, show parents bounce, side to side, up and down, and roll back.
    Then start music, repeat if desired.

  • Color or Shape Song: 3D Shapes – Cone, Cube, Cylinder, Sphere

    3D Shapes – Cone, Cube, Cylinder, Sphere

    Activity Instructions:

    Make sure to gather items of the three 3D shapes before class.
    Suggestions: A traffic cone for the cone, a square tissue box for the cube, a ball for the sphere and a coffee can or tea can for the cylinder. 

    Put the shapes in four spots around the room, review what each of them are. Then sing the song, and have the children run to the objects as you sing the song.

    Pass out microphones to children. Ask for some of their favorite songs, and sing them together. Then sing through solfege syllables, allowing class to echo. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, Do. Then introduce song for the week.

    Dump a variety bucket of instruments out for children to play and try different instruments. Teacher’s choice on background music, make sure that the song lyrics are clean and the topic is child-appropriate. You may want to find out some of your participants favorite popular songs and include them here!

    Activity Instructions:

    This game is like musical chairs. Lay out hula hoops on the ground. Play some music, and when the music stops, each person needs to get into a hoop.
    (If you don’t have hula hoops, you could use chairs, cardstock, or any object!)

    Use bunny finger puppets to sing song.

    Activity Instructions:

    Start rhythm on keyboard. Then sing song, putting each child’s name in the song. Adjust the ending based on the number of children you have – feel free to repeat or not, and add goodbyes to mommies, daddies, instruments, etc, if needed to finish the musical phrasing, depending upon the size of your class.
