  • Color or Shape Song: Shape Monster

    Activity Instructions:


    Before your first class, construct your color or shape monster (a piece of foam board with two eyes and a cutout mouth).
    Cut out shapes to feed the monster. (Circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles) Review the shapes with children. Then have them put the shapes into the monster’s mouth as you sing about them.

    Activity Instructions:

    Tell the children you will be doing a dance to the ABC song this week. Introduce the moves in the chorus, jump, stomp, spin, clap, touch the ground. Then start the song, walk and sing during the ABC verses. Repeat if desired.

    Activity Instructions:

    Tell the children that they will be learning the tune to Baa Baa Black Sheep on the Handbells today. Pass out the bells (C1-A). Explore ringing, then have children play the notes ascending (CDEFGA) and descending (AGFEDC). Then teach the song, and play through several times.

    Pass out microphones, explore speaking into them. Then ask children for some of their favorite songs, and sing them together.
    Introduce Solfege Syllables. Sing – Do – Sol – Do. Then introduce song. Sing a phrase at a time while parents/children echo.

    Activity Instructions:

    Pair up students, then allow children to practice rolling the ball, then begin song. Depending upon age and ability level, see if children can roll the ball to their partner when you say “roll” in the song. Repeat several times. With a small class, you might sit in a circle and play with everyone instead of pairing off.

Teacher’s choice on background music, make sure that the song lyrics are clean and the topic is child-appropriate. You may want to find out some of your participants favorite popular songs and include them here!

Adjust the ending based on the number of children you have – feel free to repeat or not, and add goodbyes to mommies, daddies, instruments, etc, if needed to finish the musical phrasing, depending upon the size of your class.
